PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • 1. Assist customers with adoption of cats and dogs, ensuring they have completed an application and meet ARL's guidelines for a good home.
  • 2. Assist customers with lost and found as well as reclaiming of their pets.
  • 3. Ensure all paperwork for adopted animal is accurate and follow agency procedures for adopting an animal as well as scheduling it for surgery, if necessary.
  • 4. Perform lost and found of owned pets, public stray and Animal Control animals in the kennel according to agency procedures.
  • 5. Assist customers over the telephone with questions related to adoptions, lost and found, and reclaim, as well as any related question.
  • 6. Check voice mail frequently and respond to all calls in a professional and efficient manner.
  • 7. Become familiar with all animals in the shelter so that accurate information regarding the animals can be given to potential new owners.
  • 8. Assist all customers, whether it is over the telephone or in person, in a professional and efficient manner.
  • 9. Work cooperatively with all employees who are involved in off-site adoption locations as well as the Volunteer Supervisor and Foster Supervisor.
  • 10. Report any observed medical problems to the medical department.
  • 11. Open the register in the morning, close the register at night, and handle all money transactions according to ARL's procedures.
  • 12. Walk dogs in accordance with the Open Paw Program.
  • 13. Perform other duties as requested by adoptions manager or other managers in the building.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • 1. Must love animals and have a strong desire to care for them.
  • 2. Excellent customer service skills
  • 3. Good math and organizational skills
  • 4. Professional, courteous manner.
  • 5. Previous animal handling experience would be desirable.
  • 6. Ability to walk and handle large dogs for at least one hour per day.



TITLE:                              Animal Care Attendant


PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

1.  Clean all dog or cat cages (as assigned) according to procedures described in the kennel manual and as instructed by animal care supervisor. (Animal must be removed from cage)  This also includes the Meet and Greet Rooms, Cat Cuddle Rooms, and Cat Colony Housing Room.

2. All dog cages must be cleaned and all dogs must have fresh water by 11:00 am when the shelter opens for business.

3.  If assigned to clean cat cages, clean cages in feral room and small side after the adoption areas have been cleaned. 

4.  If assigned to cats, be sure all cats have clean water and food at all times.

5.  Clean dog or cat cages after an animal is adopted so that another animal may be placed in the cage as soon as possible. 

6.  Implement tasks of Open Paw that include:  morning potty walks, use of potty area, giving stuffed Kongs daily, training, and other ideas recommended for cage enrichment and better environment for dogs.  Same ideas for cage enrichment and managing the environment for cats.

7.  Spot clean cat and dog cages throughout the day ensuring that the cages remain as clean as possible and be sure all animal have fresh water.

8.   Move blue-dotted animal to the adoption areas.

9.   Report any observed medical problems to the medical department.

10.  Perform housekeeping duties as requested by the animal care supervisor.  (This includes emptying trash, keeping the parking lots and walkways free of debris)

11. Make sure food and litter bins are full. Unload and store inventory

12.  Scrub freezer in garage.

13.  Wash and sanitize dishes.

14. Wash, dry, and fold laundry.

15.  Stuff and store Kongs in freezer for later use.

16.  Perform other tasks as requested by animal care supervisor

QUALIFICATIONS

1.    Must be able to work all shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
2.    Must love animals and have a strong desire to care for them
3.    Be able to handle the physical demands of the job to accomplish requirements of the job
4.    Must be able to lift 50 pounds
5.    Desire to create a stress free environment for the shelter animals through the ideas in the Open Paw Program

TITLE:                    FLOATER POSITION

The Animal Rescue League of Western PA is seeking an individual willing to work a flexible schedule by filling a floater position at the agency. This is a non-exempt, full-time position with 50% of the employee's time working as an Adoption Counselor and 50% of the employee's time working as an Animal Care Attendant.

The following is a list of duties for the position:

  • Assist customers with adoption of cats and dogs, ensuring they have completed an application and meet ARL's guidelines for a good home.
  • Assist customers with lost and found as well as reclaiming of their pets.

JOB DESCRIPTION

 

Job Title:                     Veterinarian Technician

PRINCIPAL OVERALL ACCOUNTABILITIES

Clinic

  • 1. Prepare and maintain clinic rooms to be sure they are fully stocked and clean.
  • 2. Work with the client to secure a brief history and weight of the animal and educate customer on some of the products the clinic sells (Heart guard, Advantage)
  • 3. Assist the doctor with the handling of the animal, x-rays, tests, and providing instructions to the owners.
  • 4. Assist clinic receptionist with the discharge of animals when needed
  • 5. Responsible for the cleanliness of the clinic area
  • 6. Responsible for cleaning cages of discharged animals

 

Kennel

  • 1. Evaluate the available cage space and blue dot those animals that are adoptable.
  • 2. Responsible for the accurate entering of animal information and keeping the information current.
  • 3. Responsible for cleaning garage area cages on a daily basis and making sure all animals have clean water and food.
  • 4. Process all bite cases according to state regulations and prepare processing for the Health Department.
  • 5. All surrendered animals are to be treated medically before being placed in the holding area.
  • 6. Perform euthanasia according to ARL guidelines
  • 7. Perform treatments according to doctor's instructions

 

Surgery

  • 1. Ensure all animals in surgery area are well cared for and all doctor's instructions are followed exactly. Report any problems immediately to the doctor.
  • 2. Clean cages in the preparation room for those animals not having surgery that day.
  • 3. Verify surgery list with adoption side, and owned animals being dropped off.
  • 4. Prepare animals for surgery and ensure all paperwork is completed.
  • 5. Prepare and properly label medicines and discharge instructions.
  • 6. Prepare animals for surgery according the doctor's instructions, to assist the doctor to meet the surgeries per hour standard.
  • 7. Assist the doctor in surgery, as requested.
  • 8. Prepare surgery packs throughout the day.
  • 9. Responsible for the overall cleanliness of the surgery and prep room

 

Qualifications

  • 1. Minimum 1 year experience practicing as a veterinarian technician, or equivalent training and education.
  • 2. Strong technical, customer service and organizational skills.
  • 3. Ability to show compassion toward animals and owners.
  • 4. Willingness to work a flexible schedule, which includes days, evenings, and weekends.
