The Animal Rescue League of Western Pennsylvania has the City of Pittsburgh's Animal Control contract. If you live within the City of Pittsburgh, your animal may have been brought to us by Animal Control. The ARL houses all city strays for Animal Control. The ARL does not personally pick up stray animals. If you are a City resident and see a stray animal in your vincinity and are unsure what to do, call Animal Control at 412.255.2036. If their office is closed, call 911. When asked, tell the dispatcher you have an animal control request.
If your pet is lost, you must personally come to our shelter to view our stray animals in order to make a positive match every 2-3 days. You may also leave photos of your lost pet with our Lost and Found staff or create a poster to fax back to us and post in your neighborhood.
There will be reclaim fees that you will be responsible for in order to get your pet back. One fee goes to the City of Pittsburgh's Animal Control. That fee is $46 for dogs and $36 for cats. The second fee is the ARL Reclaim fee, which can be up to $25. Please be ready to pay these fees when you come to reclaim your animal. For your convenience, the ARL takes cash, most major credit cards and personal checks. Animal Control's phone number is 412-255-2036.
