Photo of the Week

This photo shows a bird most of us rarely see even though they are common in Western PA. This is a Pileated Woodpecker (Dryocopus pileatus). Usually shy and elusive, this one apparently wasn't elusive enough and from the injury to his wing appears to have been attacked by a hawk or other larger raptor. He is recovering in our aviary but we are still not sure if his injury will heal well enough to allow for his release. Incidentally, the Pileated Woodpecker was the model for the cartoon character Woody Woodpecker.
